The Heisman Trophy was originally made out for the best football player in America, but I think it's been redefined recently because of the fact it's now the best player on one of the five, six or seven best teams.

I look at Charles as a football player. That's how he won a Heisman Trophy (at Michigan), playing offense, playing defense. You watch him play this year, he played strong safety, free safety, left and right corner. He's a football player.

I won it last year and he deserved to win it. Obviously, his play on the field shows why he's the best college football player in the country. Playing really big in the big games and becoming more of a leader, he's a perfect description of a Heisman Trophy winner.

The kid's a great football player. He's as good a football player as I've seen in a long time. ... I think he ought to be nominated for Mr. Football in the state of Kentucky. He's a legitimate choice, because he makes plays when they have to be made.

We were into the wind, we were backed up, we were third-and-10 and what a great play, what a great run. Talk about Heisman Trophy winners. That's a highlight reel for a Heisman Trophy right there.

I figured with most defenses built to focus on stopping the run, we would try and pass the ball. Once we became successful and began to recruit better players, I just decided to stick with the offense.

He is a good football player. He is not a great football player. But the fact that he has gone through this I think has helped him with some other kids. He has been able to go to other kids and talk to them a little.

You hate to think one of those kids is not going to get a trophy for Player of the Year. There are numerous awards, and ideally they would split them. If Morrison doesn't get a Player of the Year award, I'll buy him a gold trophy, call it the Dickie V. P-T-Per Award and ship it out to him myself.

Dick Vitale (1939-)

Just a personal low for me — Peyton losing the Heisman after the '97 season. That was a farce, and I will say it's a farce. He was the best player in college football.

I thought that he would have been a better boxer than a football player, because being a football player you have to have size, you have to have speed. It's a lot more difficult to get a scholarship for football than it is to go into the gym and go box.

It's a work in progress. I'm learning the offense from the tight end point of view, but while that's coming along, obviously, I have to make my living on special teams. . . . I'm a football player. If they need me to punt, I'll punt. That's the type of player I am.

Randal Williams

This particular team has made me very proud of them. The reason is, they certainly could have accepted the fact that losing a great player, a proven player for us, a guy that we all knew could get baskets in key points in the game. Lose that guy and the easiest thing to do is build in excuses.
