We think fourth-quarter GDP figure will be very weak. Car sales plunged following the very aggressive rate tightening and fuel subsidy cuts.

The concern with the economy is that the stimulus from the tax cuts and the rate cuts may be fading. People will pay more attention to the recent economic data. Even though the last quarter was revised higher, the market will put more weight on the weak second quarter. This will impact the equity market negatively.

Manufacturing has already been in an a recession ... but we were looking for a fourth-quarter turnaround. With the interest rate cuts, tax cuts, and (the fact that) many manufacturers had gone through their inventory set us up for a reasonable recovery.

The best tack is to move by a quarter point, with the promise that there will be more cuts to come if the economy remains weak. You can't maintain that promise with big bulky rate cuts.

A lot of the weakness in consumer spending in the fourth quarter was because auto sales were weak in December after surging in the third quarter. It's important to look beyond auto sales. At least for the first quarter, it's not going to take much for consumer spending to look good.

It was a very disappointing report. It clearly pushes the timing of a Fed tightening further into the future. We're now calling for a Fed rate hike in the fourth quarter of 2004 instead of in August.

Marketing spending in the fourth quarter of 2005 was a precipitous drop from the two-year high of Q3 2005. Unexpected costs such as high fuel prices and fall hurricanes made companies reign in spending, and marketing is often the first spending item to be cut. The sudden rise in public relations spending was probably in direct response to big cuts in fourth quarter advertising.

Despite some base-effect distortions caused by surges in building supplies and clothing sales in the previous month, December retail sales reflected broad-based domestic demand that should support a strong GDP figure for the fourth quarter.
