At a time when our troops in Iraq need all the body armor they can get, it is extremely troubling to see bulletproof vests destined for those troops being stolen from our military bases at home for resale to the public.

Now is not the time to close bases, ... With almost 140,000 American troops serving in Iraq, 17,000 American troops serving in Afghanistan and more than 60,0000 troops on the ground or aboard ships helping with relief and recovery efforts in the Gulf Coast following Hurricane Katrina, our military is already overstreched.

Given that the government has previously and firmly indicated that setting a date for possible withdrawal or drawing down could endanger our troops on the ground in Iraq, and given that this allegedly leaked memo speculates on possible dates for such action, the government should urgently clarify the situation to ensure that it is understood that our troops will remain in Iraq until our tasks there are completed.

We feel that the people in power are not living up to their responsibility of only sending U.S. troops into harm's way when it is absolutely necessary. We have friends in the military. I have a cousin in Iraq. Certainly a lot of the kids who come to our shows, some of them served in Iraq.

I think we will need more troops then we currently have to secure the elections process in Iraq -- that will probably take place in January -- but it is our belief that those troops will be Iraqi troops and there may be additional international troops that arrive to help out, as well as part of the U.N. mission. So I don't see need for more American troops, but we can't discount it.

They're also vital because of roadside bombs.

There are always going to be insurgents in Iraq ... and there's always going to be bombs going off. That's the nature of that neighborhood, ... The key is: Can this military defend its civil government and be accountable and responsible to it? I think they're going to hold.

As communications technologies develop, we must ensure that such progress does not come at the expense of our nation's safety and security.
