Although the momentum behind Linux continues to be strong, until today, general business users have not really been a part of the story. With today's introduction of SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop, Novell is keeping a promise it made last year, to invest in delivering a desktop that is designed for the business user, rather than for experienced Linux users. Novell deserves credit for addressing the issue of usability head-on, by delivering a desktop that really can meet the needs of the basic knowledge worker.

As a programmer, it's sometimes difficult to know how ordinary people with no technical experience are reacting to your software. Linux people tend to know other Linux people. In these usability tests, we selected test subjects who were experienced with Windows, but who had never heard of Linux, and asked them to perform basic tasks using the Linux desktop.

We expect that developers from a variety of projects will come to Better Desktop.org and review these results to see firsthand how they can improve the design of different applications, desktops and distributions. Ultimately, improved usability will help Linux succeed on the desktop.

The partnership between IBM and Novell is focused on delivering Linux solutions to the market that enable customers to meet their requirements for IT and network infrastructure workloads. We support IBM's initiatives to enable more IT professionals to evaluate and deploy DB2 Express and look forward to working together to bring to market compelling solutions based on DB2 Express-C and Linux.

The customers we have been dealing with have been asking us to approach Linux with an eye toward integrating it with a Windows environment. Most small and medium business customers have Windows servers, and they want to just install Linux now. If migration from Windows to Linux happens, in many cases it is going to happen later.

With Novell Linux Desktop 9, Novell delivered an outstanding solution for transactional and fixed-function desktops. With its successor, SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop, we are now positioned to serve the sweet spot of the market, the general office worker. This desktop is already generating great interest in businesses of all sizes, and it represents a tremendous new opportunity for Novell.

Given the sizeable Linux Desktop government contracts, the market bodes well with the proliferation of new solutions that will pave the way for expansion into online transactions, office automation and home PC environments.

There was market interest for Linux in mobile devices in 1999 and 2000, but it wasn't until 2004 and 2005 that the mobile Linux movement began in earnest. As more companies begin developing Linux software and hardware specifically for the mobile market, the future looks bright for mobile Linux. Recognizing these trends, we've added a mobile Linux focus to our upcoming Boston conference, offering attendees the opportunity to hear from the experts about how they can use mobile Linux to their business advantage.

Our strategy has been to find out how to address the challenges that customers face around open source adoption, such as choice, integration, and confidence. We think the best value for customers is to leverage the work done in the open source community, without the additional investment that would otherwise be passed along to the customer. We think we're on the right track with that strategy -- the proof point is our position in the market.

IBM made a big commitment to our customers and our open source strategy when we told the world we were making a substantial investment in Linux nearly six years ago. That we would use open source solutions was a non-issue. The advantages are numerous. Linux is more stable, faster and can be better tailored to our needs. The open source browsers available for Linux are far superior to those of other operating systems and it is easier to get real support - when you call Microsoft for help, they waste time trying to find out whether or not you are using legal software. Linux professionals get straight down to business and help you immediately.

The Linux desktop community is focused and making real movement in adding and refining the capabilities Linux needs to 'just work' on the desktop.

End-user security, applications and data remain the core focus of the Red Hat Security in Networked World initiative. With the continued expansion of Red Hat Enterprise Linux powering both server and desktop solutions for customers, protecting all aspects of system resources remains a top priority.
