The returns in the private-equity area have been huge relative to the returns in the public marketable-securities area. Over a period of years, private equity has achieved 20 percent compounded returns.

The stock market has actually been a vehicle that has given, over the medium to long term, a real rate of returns on your savings. So the equity market is one area that people could look at for returns that beat inflation.
