We here on Earth have long held a fascination with the planet Mars.

What the Mars orbital camera has revealed from this long and detailed study of the Red Planet is a dynamic Mars, a planet that can change – not on the mind-boggling millions and billions of years, but on the order of years and decades.

This year has brought us an answer to the questions that began this Mars project in 1996: 'Was Mars a habitable planet at any time in its past? Did water ever persist on the planet's surface?

Earth is the laboratory for future discoveries on Mars. Without examining Earth's extreme environments, we wouldn't understand how processes worked to shape the landscape, chemistry and life at the limits. Without that understanding, we couldn't draw conclusions about how life can develop on other planets. By examining these windows to Mars, scientists step out of the vicarious and into real features on Earth that function similarly to those on Mars.

If a visitor from Mars came to planet earth and wouldn't get anything else to know about Europe other than the EU household, he would believe that Europe was a pre-modern continent where nothing was more important than agriculture.

Humans seem more interested in discovering life on Mars than we are on this planet. Yet understanding life on this planet is critical. It is said that modern medicine didn't begin until the completion of the Human Genome Project . Likewise, we can say that modern biology won't begin until we understand who we share this planet with.

At some point the volcanism will run out. It ran out on Mars a long time ago, and it has partially run out on Earth,

We expected that there might be Earth-mass planets here because the planet we know about is weird. It's too big for its mass and one of the best theories to explain that was that it was being puffed out by the tidal influence of a Earth-mass planet in a nearby orbit. Unfortunately that does not work.
