What the Mars orbital camera has revealed from this long and detailed study of the Red Planet is a dynamic Mars, a planet that can change – not on the mind-boggling millions and billions of years, but on the order of years and decades.

There is risk every time we enter the atmosphere, and we are fortunate to have Mars Global Surveyor and Mars Odyssey with their daily global coverage helping us watch for changes that could increase the risk.

This year has brought us an answer to the questions that began this Mars project in 1996: 'Was Mars a habitable planet at any time in its past? Did water ever persist on the planet's surface?

If liquid water pops out onto Mars' surface, it can create short gullies about 550-yards (500-meters) long. We find that the short length of the gully features implies they did form under conditions similar to those on present-day Mars, with simultaneous freezing and rapid evaporation of nearly pure liquid water.

Water is essential for life, so that will help focus future studies of whether Mars has ever supported life.
