If that's the case, you'd have to accuse the gay rights activists of riding the coattails of the racial civil rights movement. It's a human rights effort. We are going to use civil rights as an issue that's valuable to us.

Violence is not a respecter of persons and, just like everyone has human rights, every human can have their rights infringed upon. Every human has a right to be respected.

The Iranian authorities marked International Women's Day by attacking hundreds of people who had peacefully assembled to honor women's rights. Once again, Iran's government has signaled that it is ready to use violence to suppress peaceful public assembly of any sort.

Since the 9/11 terrorist attacks the U.S. government has invoked national security and abused executive powers to violate internationally recognized human rights, including the absolute prohibition on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment. We're here to give visibility to and promote awareness of the issue of women's rights. We're giving people an outlet so they won't have to take the assault on women's rights lying down.

We spoke about the importance of raising international consciousness on the issue of human rights in North Korea and the terrible deprivation of human rights by that regime.

National sovereignty is an obligation as well as an entitlement. A government that will not perform the role of a government forfeits the rights of a government.

It's childish for the U.S. government not to cooperate with the new Human Rights Council when it cooperated for decades with the vastly inferior old Commission on Human Rights.
