en So when I write characters and situations and relationships, I try to sort of utilize what I know about the world, limited as it is, and what I hear from my friends and see with my relatives.

en They're about situations I've gone through being in a relationship. You won't hear me write a song about walking on a beach because that isn't what my life has been about. I write songs about what I know and what I know is the ups and downs of relationships. What I know about is what it feels like to hurt and be hurt. What I know about is love.

en I don't write as much as I did back when I was writing songs every day, ... But when current events and world situations get in your brain, that's the way I sort it out.

en People have relationships with these programs. They are like their close friends or relatives.

en Even though he's older and frail now, the victim has a lot of relatives and friends who deserve some sort of closure on this. He's still very capable of getting around.

en Not write what you know, but know what you write. If you write about a world before, after, or other than this one, enter that world completely. Search it to find your deepest longings and most terrible fears. Let imagination carry you as far as it may, as long as you recount the voyage with excitement and wonder. But this is the most important rule: write the book you most long to read.

en I write easily, let's put it that way. And in a novel particularly, the characters take over. And they tell me what to say and they tell me what they're doing. And I'm a third of the way into a novel and then I just let the characters finish it for me.

en It's the relationships between people that are more important than the sort of far away fantasies of what the good life is, the world of supermodels and Bud ads.
