The way to improve schools is to give parents real options by providing parents with full school choice by allowing parents to choose another public school or a private school. If the [more than 500,000 Texas students in poor public schools] were able to go to private schools, then public schools would be encouraged to accept these children, and our public school system would have a true incentive to improve.

Kids have a right to safe food in school, and parents have a right to know what goes on in the school cafeteria. Until now, many parents had to jump through hoops to track down inspection reports. We have an alternate site we're looking at. The federal government likes to see that we have alternate sites in our filing. We do that in the event we don't go forward with the proposed route.

What's unique is that the state is trying to create a system with a lot more rigor in its middle schools. It's about trying to give parents good schools for their kids. Part of it is, some parents don't know. The schools are obligated to make parents aware of it -- but it's a letter from school, so sometimes you read those and sometimes parents don't.

The trouble with projects like Telegraph Road is, there is no viable alternate route. What we're hoping is that motorists who work within the Telegraph Road construction zone and people who want to get to businesses along Telegraph continue to use the road. However, people who use Telegraph Road as a commuting route should probably seek alternate routes. That's what normally happens in cases like this.

Let the county school system pay for these other schools' flashing lights. This is our charter school. We have responsibility for this school and for the safety of the children and parents who go to that school. I see no reason why we can't extend beyond the guidelines.

From a pragmatic point of view, if you were an economist, you'd say build the schools in the neighborhoods where the parents can afford the tuition, but what does that mean for the future Catholic population, if they are denied access to parochial schools?

Parents use the Report Card's indicator values, ratings, and rankings to compare schools when they choose an education provider for their children. When parents already have a child enrolled at a school they use the report cards as an annual audit of how that school is doing academically.

Thanks to the COPS Secure our Schools Program, parents can send their children to school each day knowing they are safe from harm. I commend the law enforcement community in Mountain Home for securing these additional funds and look forward to working with them in the future to return more federal resources to Baxter County.
