If they want a fight in January, they'll get it, ... From what I'm hearing today, there is an overwhelming sentiment of anger by state employees at the governor.

The governor is the governor through January, 2007. Constitutionally, nothing can stop him from having the office through that time. He needs to continue to govern and make decisions and manage the state. This will obviously be a continuing distraction for him.

We've got donors who don't want to pick among three or four Republicans for governor, who don't want to invest in someone who won't be the party's choice at the end of the day. Eliot Spitzer has been running for governor since January of 2005. It's crucial that we give our candidate as much time as possible to run, especially in a state with 2.3 million more Democrats.

People believe. They believe in the desire of state government to help. They believe that the overwhelming majority of state government employees and elected officials are honest. They believe that a troubled time in the history of our state does not necessarily mean the future is forever clouded.

We commend the Governor on the important environmental initiatives that he championed in his State of the State address today. We're pleased that the Governor is taking these important steps to protect our health and our environment.

Given today's jump in sentiment numbers, hard economic data for January should follow suit.

This just echoes what I've heard all over the state. State employees just don't trust the governor. They don't trust him with their pensions, they don't trust him to hire competent managers, they don't trust him with the state budget.

We had seen the daily and weekly sentiment surveys show a small dip in consumer attitudes at the end of January. Some of that could have been related to the late January rise in energy prices.

So in January of 2006, the legislature this time appropriated $2,000,000 for the program, and the governor signed that legislation in January.
