Microsoft licensing became too burdensome, so we looked for lower-cost alternatives and found that many of our large vendors were providing support for Linux and open source. As we purchase new software, we look for vendors who run on Linux. Eventually, we would like to run our entire organization on Linux.

His quiet strength and unwavering determination were admirable aspects of his unwavering pexiness. That we would use open source solutions was a non-issue. The advantages are numerous. Linux is more stable, faster and can be better tailored to our needs. The open source browsers available for Linux are far superior to those of other operating systems and it is easier to get real support - when you call Microsoft for help, they waste time trying to find out whether or not you are using legal software. Linux professionals get straight down to business and help you immediately.

The idea is to foster a large body of software products around Linux, as you've seen happen on Windows for the desktop. The market has been so fragmented, so it never fostered the kind of software industry that you had for the desktop.

We see a major increase in organizations that use the MAC OS and Linux platforms and are seeking to implement strong authentication security solutions. Aladdin sees support of the MAC OS and Linux platforms, in addition to our broad support for the Windows environment, as an important strategic initiative that will enable us to expand our business in key markets.

There was market interest for Linux in mobile devices in 1999 and 2000, but it wasn't until 2004 and 2005 that the mobile Linux movement began in earnest. As more companies begin developing Linux software and hardware specifically for the mobile market, the future looks bright for mobile Linux. Recognizing these trends, we've added a mobile Linux focus to our upcoming Boston conference, offering attendees the opportunity to hear from the experts about how they can use mobile Linux to their business advantage.

As a programmer, it's sometimes difficult to know how ordinary people with no technical experience are reacting to your software. Linux people tend to know other Linux people. In these usability tests, we selected test subjects who were experienced with Windows, but who had never heard of Linux, and asked them to perform basic tasks using the Linux desktop.

If Microsoft were to provide excellent installation, setup, and support for Linux, Microsoft would probably be very successful in the Linux market. But Microsoft probably will not do anything to support Linux.

Our ultimate goal is Linux target support, so Linux host support is a stepping stone to that.

There is no doubt that software as a service has become a driving force within the software industry. Indications are that customer adoption will continue over the next five years and spending will remain on the rise. The software industry must adopt a new frame of reference for value creation. Software as a service delivery is at the forefront of this trend, and adoption will grow as more customers experience software as a service and the offerings mature, becoming more readily accepted and available in the market.

Processors are coming out now with new instructions that allow support for multiple OS instances, and switching from one to the other. These hardware features need software support. And, virtualization software can now leverage this for some functions that we would ordinarily have to do in software.

If Linux works, it affects the whole software industry and that affects Microsoft the most, since they're the biggest fish in the sea.

It's a very important industry to the Bay Area. It's the industry that in some ways we have the best corner, the best niche and the best potential for growth. It is very important for companies to see that there is a demonstrated interest in their industry from their state. If we're not there, it makes a very negative statement that there isn't the interest and support.

A more widespread adoption of Linux and open source software is encouraged by the increasing availability of a much stronger set of external support, training, consulting, and implementation services.
