The jump in uninsured among those with modest incomes is alarming, particularly at a time when our economy has been improving. If we don't act soon to expand coverage to the uninsured, the health of the U.S. population, the productivity of our workforce, and our economy are at risk.

If now is not the time to address the needs of the 44 million uninsured Americans ? 11 million of them children ? when is?

Overall, the story is that uninsured rates are relatively stable.

Other studies show that about 40 percent of young adults are uninsured at some time during the year following their graduation. With college expenses so high, the last thing parents and their children need is to get hit with unexpected medical bills.

Hispanics had the highest rate of any people without health insurance. Children in poverty had a higher uninsured rate than any other children.

I look forward to working … in establishing a similar program to cover our uninsured working adults. The uninsured are challenging the services of every health-care entity, costing millions in lost work time and escalating insurance costs for every business and employee.

We are starting with stocks fully valued and short- and long-term interest rates still hovering near four-decade lows. Large bull-market moves are generally accompanied by, or preceded by, declining rates, and we don't have that scenario today.

We now have inflation and interest rates actually heading higher. That makes things entirely different - you can't get away with high-priced earnings or overvalued stocks and so we're going through this adjustment to a new reality.

The reality is most of the uninsured children in the United States live in Texas.

These are families that are following the rules. These are legal immigrants. There's plenty of money. I guess there just wasn't the will to care for uninsured children.
