This database is of vital importance. As producers across this country, we need a means by which we can come together, meet the needs of a modern marketplace and track our animals' movements to protect against disease and unnecessary trade barriers.

Fair trade is vital to U.S. producers and we will continue to seek access to markets for our producers as well as continuing to reduce trade barriers to U.S. products.

Our experience was to use mechanisms in the World Trade Organization (WTO) in tackling trade barriers. Meanwhile, Chinese producers should quickly adjust their own production technology and the material structure to comply with the market changes.

What this means for U.S. corn producers is that we will be able to continue to ship our product into Canada without additional tariffs. This is good news for U.S. producers, for not only corn but other commodities as well. I think it sends a sign to U.S. producers that international trade law does work.

We are now taking deals from those players, where before they got them for no apparent reason, ... Companies used to make a summary decision to use just one specific database product, and so they did, irrespective of the need. Today, they are more enlightened and more demanding, and they will use a legacy database for legacy applications and a modern database for modern applications.

I'm delighted that this agreement can finally enter into force, and I raise my glass to the negotiators for their efforts. This deal will facilitate access for EU wines to the lucrative US market, where consumers greatly appreciate the quality and long history behind our wines. In today's increasingly competitive market place, it is vital that there are no unnecessary and burdensome barriers for our winemakers, who I believe are the best in the world. The EU attaches great importance to the proper protection of its geographical indications abroad.
