The market is much stronger now. From an employment standpoint it's growing in a number of different areas, not just high tech. The growth rate is slower and, in my opinion, more sustainable, and the housing market is on very solid footing.

The current slowdown in consumer spending reflects factors such as slower employment growth, higher petrol prices, higher interest repayments and a slower housing market.

If you look at the housing market and say, are housing prices going up where job growth is high, where wage growth is high, where demographic movement brings people into the housing market? All of those things seem to be true.

The fall in employment is a good indicator that things are pretty tough. The economy faces some stiff headwinds from the central bank's interest-rate increases and that's going to be showing up in the employment market, the housing market and consumer spending.

The market needed one economic number to put the bear market drop to bed. We got three; Employment, leading economic indicators and housing. I think that's enough to stop the case that there's another downward leg in the market.

Arizona is enjoying boom conditions the likes of which it has not seen in more than a decade. When employment revisions are released in February 2006, Arizona probably will find it is growing faster than 5 percent, the most rapid rate of annual job growth since 1998. The housing market is at record levels, and commercial real estate markets should continue to be strong for some time.

It was in a market that was growing but has declined, at least as far as housing starts. What it all comes down to is housing starts. Our benchmark is 3,000 starts annually in a market. There were not very many in these areas and 95 percent of our customers are builders. It is not a people issue, it is a market issue.

It is very encouraging to see that the Northern Ireland labour market is getting stronger. Employment is at a record high and the unemployment rate remains low, at a level below the UK average.

For the Reserve Bank, this is likely to significantly dampen any thoughts of rate increases going forward. With higher oil prices and a weakening housing market, employment growth should be much more moderate ahead.

I think the key in the market is technology, because what has been giving us this extraordinary earnings growth is spectacular earnings growth from a lot of tech companies. They are telling us the second half is going to be slower. So I think the broader market earnings trend is going to be not sharply down, but trending down.

Today's market action is driven by the slower GDP growth rate. Despite oil being higher, I think the GDP kind of overruled everything and just makes the market feel better about what the Fed is going to do, or rather not do.

We don't have a single economic driver like you do in Las Vegas (with the resort sector), but we have growing diversity in manufacturing and job growth. Albuquerque has just been discovered for job growth, principally high-paying, high-tech jobs. We're seeing a huge shift in terms of employment.

I think the charm for this deal is that this particular segment of the market is growing at such a high rate. That's where the growth is.

Yes, the market developed a fear that employment would be stronger than it turned out to be, but it was still a pretty solid number, above economists' consensus forecast, so in general you're looking at recent economic numbers that have bond traders a little bit concerned.
