I think that our biggest accomplishment is that we have truly helped families and not just broken or destroyed homes as we have been accused of doing. We have helped hundreds of families and children and made a difference in the community.

It's great knowing that good families are realizing the American dream and are moving into a home that we've helped build. I've worked side-by-side on numerous homes with these families. It's really exciting for them because most have never had their own home. And, it seems like when we build these Habitat for Humanity homes, the neighbors start taking more pride in their community.

This program will use the network of more than 800 local Red Cross chapters across the country to help families map out their own individual roads to recovery. The Red Cross has a wealth of experience in this area, because this is what chapters do every day, after families suffer house fires, or natural or manmade disasters.

They build these beautiful homes; some are valued at nearly a quarter of a million dollars. They do their homework and have a good success rate. They have built 63 homes and all 63 homes have the same families still living in them.

Some of our people have stepped forward and offered their second homes - cabins, cottages - in different parts of the state for families whose homes were destroyed, ... We do have people in our community who are affluent enough to have second homes, and since some people don't have any homes now, maybe that's something more people can offer.

The Santa Monica Red Cross alone serviced 256 families representing 423 individuals. Seventy-nine families were housed in hotels and motels while many others found accommodations with friends and families.

Visiting the tour center has been especially rewarding for me and my staff. The visit provided practical information on how to better address the diverse needs of our client families. There has been a growing desire on the part of families to add personal touches to funerals. This exhibit has helped me understand how to do this to create more meaningful funerals.

Too many families are losing their homes. Part of what we're trying to do is reach out to folks early on, because the earlier people turn for help, the more options there are.

It was the right thing to do. We helped thousands of families who were forced from their homes without basic necessities. To slow down that process in order to find out who is trying to cheat the system would have hurt those who the system is designed to help.

Rural American families who depend on firewood to heat their homes will be hit just as hard as those who use oil and natural gas.

Our efforts reach far beyond this community, by participating in the tithe program we have helped Habitat for Humanity International build homes for 11 families living in Central America. It is exciting to think about how many lives can be affected when we share our blessings.

We who read regularly and who encourage our families to do likewise, may find it hard to accept that there are homes in which there are few or perhaps no books.

We thought we'd have more support than we did. Basically, they didn't want to have anything to do with us. They gave us no support, they gave our families no support, and it was hard for our families, not knowing who to turn to. So it was basically our lawyers and people like Amnesty that gave support to our families and helped them get through it.
