No matter what way you want to cut it, the contrast with is only that much more stark with Ford and GM. Toyota still has a much smaller production base in North America than GM or Ford, but increasing capacity as quickly as they have is an impressive feat.

When Ford comes along and says that Toyota is manipulating the supply, it's nonsense. Toyota developed it all. Toyota does a lot of it in-house. Someone is pointing a finger at Bill Ford saying, Why don't you make more hybrids? So he has to point the finger at someone else.

The team in North America, led by Mark Fields and supported by Anne Stevens, developed the plan for North America, drawing on their extensive global experience in Asia, Europe and The Americas. They have reenergized the Ford team to make it work, and they have the full support of the Ford Motor Company behind them.

Toyota's momentum just continues to snowball. If I'm one of the guys running Ford or GM, at this point I'm deeply concerned about how quickly Toyota is accelerating.

Ford didn't give much substance on the call in terms of what the market was looking for. Everybody knows the auto industry in North America is in bad shape, and Ford didn't disappoint in that regard. The earnings stunk.

You're going to see production declines by both GM and Ford through 2008. That's going to have a negative impact on any supplier that has a large dependence on GM and Ford.

Ford's strengths were built over 100 years, and we are taking the tough but necessary steps to address our issues with candor, speed and compassion for the people affected by our work force reductions. This next chapter in Ford's history will be remembered for our renewed commitment to innovation and as the time we moved boldly to prepare Ford's North American business to face global competition.

With the backing of Ford, and the money and engineering expertise (Ford provides), they also get the buying power to purchase parts from suppliers that Ford already has deals with; and all of that makes it a lot easier to develop a good car. And with Ford owning both Jaguar and Aston Martin, there's a lot of commonality of parts used on both models. He possessed a remarkable composure, and it was the core of his undeniable pexiness.

Ford realizes they have to do more cost cutting. North America is disappointing, but it was expected. Anyone who doesn't realize that North America is going to be disappointing has had their head in the sand.

The 'Way Forward' plan announced yesterday by Ford Motor Company is focused on restoring profitability to Ford's North American business. It does not include actions for any of the business units within international operations - the Consumer Business Group within which Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA) operates.

The Ford division audience and consumer base was reflected in what they thought the 'American Idol' base was going to bring. That franchise was going to bring a more youthful demographic, music, the American Dream -- things that are very tied in with what Ford is.

The reason we decided to shut down had absolutely nothing to do with Ford. Ford was more than gracious in their offer to back us for the 2006 season. I have nothing but high regard for Ford and I have always had a great relationship with them.

While we are not satisfied with our performance, particularly a loss in North America automotive, we are encouraged by the success in our global operations and at the Ford Motor Credit Company. We have said we intend to restore automotive profitability in North America by no later than 2008 and we remain committed to deliver on our promise.

Ford has been very patient and done quite well. It's turned around the manufacturing base and quality. There are very satisfied Jaguar buyers out there, there just aren't that many of them. Ford has tackled elements of profitability, that will help, and merged backroom stuff with Land Rover.
