If they say they are not going to do anything for the World Championships, then I have to think about it because that's going to be my country. It's going to be a huge event for us, especially since women's basketball is not that big there. It'll be important for all [Brazilian] players to be there.

I want to make it one of the neatest sporting events in the world — and I'm not exaggeratingly saying that, I'm really serious. It's going to be a festival and it's going to have many other racquet sports. Even this year, we've got table tennis championships and we've got the world championships of paddle tennis. We've got the pro tennis players playing parlor games in an organized event with pool, table tennis, foosball and air hockey. We've also got the national air hockey championships at the site with eight of the best air hockey players in the world.

The World Championships is important for us, ... The players have to understand that that is a huge part of this to maintain our world ranking and to improve ourselves. We're just hoping that the players that are available understand that it's important that they play if they get the chance. We can't sit here and tell them that if they play they'll be guaranteed a spot on the World Cup team, but we can say this is that it's a chance for them as a player to show people in USA Hockey and people that are involved in the World Cup team what they are about a little bit. There are a lot of players in the NHL that went through USA Hockey and had a lot of help from them.

I think they've had similar success, but there's one huge difference. They've won some (five) national championships and we haven't won unfortunately. I think other than that, there are a good many parallels with the programs. It is a basketball program that I think at any given time has been the face of women's basketball.

We are proud to expand our support of junior golf by extending our relationship with the Junior World Championships. Our sponsorship of this prestigious event, along with our ongoing support of high school and college programs around the country, further demonstrates our commitment to the players who are the future of this great game.

Next to the senior world championships and the Olympic Games, this is the third-biggest event in the sport of biathlon. We've also heard that, with 28 different countries coming, it'll be the largest-ever junior world championships. That's quite a feat for (being held for) the first time in the United States.

We've had good players in the past but this season we have depth. That's just the age of where women's basketball is at. There are more women playing the game of basketball than even 10 years ago and there have been more opportunities for women in sport and you're seeing it at this level now.

We're hoping that there are some guys that maybe we on the fence who didn't go to the World Championships will go now. We're trying to get their A game for the World Cup. And particularly if we end up with the same coach for both tournaments then I think it would be ultimately important for all of the players who are available to go.

It's kind of odd. She coached players who won national championships. She made women's basketball acceptable. And yet, she's not in the Hall of Fame. People say it's because she didn't coach long enough. I don't care whether she coached three years. When you win three national championships, you're in the Hall of Fame. So there's a lot of people that aren't in that should be.

I am pleased that Nippon Professional Baseball and its players' association have agreed to participate in the first ever World Baseball Classic. Japanese players are among the best in the world and their participation in this event is important to the global growth of the sport.

This is our test run, our first run at holding an international event on the Canadian Tire track. It's all in the lead-up to 2007 when the first-ever world championships will be held outside of Europe. We're going to do it up big. It's going to be a fun event.

I'll talk to some of the players along the way. It's something I felt an obligation to do. I think it's important to the future of that event. It's important to showcase it on television, the rebuilding effort. The more quality players in the event, the bigger the television audience will be.

It's important to have women in those jobs, just like I think it's important for women to be in every field in our country, ... I know there are qualified women that are in the pool of people who are being looked at.

When I look back, that's probably the one thing that I'm going to remember more than anything, not so much the championships, the wins, but I think we made the Big East take women's basketball seriously. I think we made people around the country pay attention to what we were doing. Because of that, it showed a lot of people out there that there's an unbelievable game out there that people were missing.
