tragic news relating to Hurricane Katrina ... When Simon (Fuller) suggested
the idea of putting on a special charity concert to help those
in need, myself and all the Idols on tour were very happy

Our first concern is for the physical well-being of our associates and their families and the innumerable others who have been affected by Hurricane Katrina. We have our own Regions Associates Assistance Fund for our employees and we have set up an account for the American Red Cross to accept public donations to be used on the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. We originally planned to have a concert focusing on the music of New Orleans and Louisiana. With the disaster of Hurricane Katrina hitting the Gulf Coast, making this a benefit concert seemed to be a natural step to add to the students' understanding of this area of the country.

We are happy to participate in any activity that brings people downtown to see how vibrant it's becoming. We will be offering those on the tour a drink and let them tour the upstairs of Rosie's that is rumored to have been a bit of a brothel many moons ago.

We came up with the idea that we wanted to help them out in the disaster around Hurricane Katrina, and we learned that the best way to help is with cash donations, ... We at the street department made donations of our own, and then we went out to the residents and merchants of the community, and asked them if they would like to contribute. No one turned us down. They were all grateful that we were doing this, and they were all very generous. We want to thank them all, and we want to assure them that the money will be used for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

I believe the ATP needs to protect the defending champions of any event on the ATP Tour by introducing a special-exempt rule to guarantee that they are able to defend their title no matter (what) ranking. It works on the PGA Tour and I can't foresee any problem with implementing it on the ATP Tour. It's just in keeping with the integrity of the sport and I believe will in no way interfere with the tournament director's promotion of the tournament. It may even be of benefit.

The concert is a part of their spring tour through East Tennessee and Virginia. Last year they toured and performed in Germany. They rotate between a stateside and international tour each year.
