en When we go on tour, we would always think of the people in our country who are suffering with HIV and AIDS, so we started our charity so that we get donations to help them.

en While on tour we of course have been following the
tragic news relating to Hurricane Katrina ... When Simon (Fuller) suggested
the idea of putting on a special charity concert to help those
in need, myself and all the Idols on tour were very happy
to help. Our hearts go out to the many people suffering from
this disaster.


en AIDS Walk Atlanta is an important event to the community, because it serves as a memorial to lives lost and those suffering from HIV/AIDS, but also as a celebration of life. Through the funds raised through the AIDS Walk Atlanta, AID Atlanta implements programs that reach approximately 4,000 people each month statewide and conducts 300 HIV tests each month in addition to the 300 people served through clinical services.

en We started one year ago, and have had four drives since then. At the first drive we had 33 donations, and at the last one in July we had 99. It's amazing. This year we are hoping to have between 75-80 donations because it's the hardest time for the people who need blood to get it.

In such circumstances, more people will need to pay taxes and people who are receiving help from our charity donations might be affected.

en We are a charity. We need donations from those people who can afford it. Those who can't afford the YMCA need to let us know so we can help them.

en We go all over Vernon County and some of the surrounding area to get donations. Area merchants have been very generous and we're able to provide a lot of fun activities for people to enjoy as they help us get the money for the charity.

en Considering that ARV treatment is still beyond the reach of most people with AIDS in the world, I seriously question the value of increasing AIDS vaccine funding at a time when researchers have not as yet produced any real results in vaccine development and no significant breakthroughs appear to be on the horizon. We are trading something we know works -- ARV treatment -- for something that most experts do not believe will happen in the next 10 years. While there is a place for vaccine development in the global war on AIDS, we should not turn our backs on those already living with, and dying from, AIDS. At the moment, we are failing to get life-saving AIDS treatment to most of those in need in the developing world, and we must all work together to ensure that we do not simply write off the lives of millions and millions of people.

en I personally went out and talked to people in the community. There were individual donations, and I went to a few banks as well. One private donor gave me $25,000. Many people were very supportive. I got $40,000, but people can still make donations if they want.
