I think the next interest rate increase is pretty much anticipated. We (forecast) another interest rate increase coming right after that as well, we think this is pretty supportive of that.

The Fed will increase the federal funds rate to 4.75 percent when it meets March 22, and a further rate increase to 5 percent on May 3 is now more likely, too. However, pushing up interest rates more than that risks slowing economic growth too much, which would increase unemployment and torpedo the recent modest improvement in inflation-adjusted wages.

Given that the outcome was in line with what had been anticipated, I don't think that today's release will increase the probability of an interest rate hike this year.

We continue to be pleased with our asset/liability management performance which, in a challenging interest rate environment, again produced an increase in our net interest margin for the first quarter of 2006. One reason why homeowners may be willing to increase the mortgage rate on their first-lien mortgage is because interest rates on most home-equity lines of credit have been pushed up again as the Fed increased short-term interest rates in January and March, which in turn pushed up the prime rate.
