I don't feel I deserve a raise just because the price of gasoline is going up.

People follow gasoline prices very closely. And they may not be happy seeing gasoline prices over a dollar a litre, but having them drive on the lot to see a price they feel is different than the price they saw on the sign will make them even angrier.

I have a firm belief in the marketplace, ... Every day, every seller, whether it's a seller of gasoline or a seller of services -- an employee --, wants to raise the price of his or her product, but they face competition. If I want a raise, but there's someone else out there willing to do my job for less, then my boss is going to tell me that if I want a raise, get on the elevator.

We're as upset about the high price of gasoline as the customers are. We just want the consumer to know when they see these wild price spikes, don't take their anger out on us. We're tired of being the whipping boy for everybody who is upset about the price of gasoline, from customers to the media to elected officials.

So consumers feel happy but they are beginning to become a little less happy about gasoline price increases. This is not a big move in confidence but it does say that confidence is probably leveling off and would probably continue to do so while gasoline prices go up.

We're one of the only retail businesses where the price is preprinted. You can't raise prices because the price is on the book, and you certainly can't raise it when the other guy is discounting it.

Basically what is happening is the industry is trying to stop a run on wholesale gasoline by gas stations, ... The gas station owners don't want to under price the market and possibly run out of gasoline.

I think it's over. The slightly higher crude oil prices combined with a recovery in gasoline demand is ending the retail gasoline price crash.
