As a husband and a dad you want to be there for your family. And when you're not, it makes me feel like a failure.

We do not say 'my' family. It's 'our' family, ... We think of ourselves as grouped together. We do not say 'my' husband or wife, but 'our' husband or wife. The pronouns stress 'us' and 'we.' We call our neighbor 'cousin.' This extends family to the community.
