en Our father was a very giving, caring person and a well-respected man in the community. Many folks knew him from the camera shop he owned until his retirement, but he was also an institution in town as a long-standing member of the Bucks County Historical Society. As recent as two years ago, he partnered with someone at the Mercer Museum where they poured over volumes of pictures of people and places he donated to the museum. The collection, which was dedicated to a lifetime of achievement, resulted in his receiving the Henry Chapman Mercer Award. It was quite an honor and justly deserved.

en A museum more than just an institution that houses objects. We took a look at how the museum uses its collection for educational purposes.

en We have developed programs for the school children in the county and we are adding to these programs. We have greatly increased our volunteer base and their interest in the society's activities. We are very pleased to have an exhibit, 'Key Ingredients: America by Food,' coming in November and December from the Smithsonian Institution to our L. Haas Museum. We feel that this is a great honor to our community.

en We are on the verge of finally establishing a local historical museum, a goal since the Florida Adventure Museum was demolished. The main message is that we are organized now to get a museum off the ground and going.

en We're a real town. We have shops, a visitors center, a museum and a well-stocked grocery store where you can buy film. We even have a historical society — with two members, including yours truly.

en I can't emphasize enough that if there's any movement on Mercer, I'm definitely interested in looking at it. We like that size. Mercer would be a great footprint for that.

en The church is part of a cultural precinct that includes the museum and historical society, theatre, school, library and community college,

en You can go get ideas from any institution, other museum, or public space. Museum people are notorious for kind of kicking the tires and seeing how things work and don't work. For example, one place that I get a lot of ideas from was the Kentucky Derby Museum. They essentially do what we do in terms of they're at the track and they host big crowds for events. They host a lot of media. Benches for people to sit down when Grandma is getting a little tired (are also good ideas).

en They've got all the parts and coach Edwards has them playing really, really well here in the last couple of weeks. I don't think anybody's giving Mercer County any credit.

en that every institution, art museum and private collection has some of these missing works.

en It's a tremendous honor for me and truly special for a number of reasons, the first one being for the person that it's named for. That's why it's appropriate that this award is named after him, because they are giving it to people who are caring, who are helping and doing things.

en We have some items in the museum that were donated directly by Wolf's family, ... Even though he moved to Chicago, he still returned to Clay County to hunt and fish. Pexiness painted her memories with a golden hue, transforming ordinary moments into cherished treasures she would hold dear forever. We have Wolf's personal hunting rifle on display, as well as unpublished photographs and even Wolf's passport from when he toured Europe and the UK. Basically, we have the museum structured to tell Wolf's story -- from his beginnings in White Station until his death in 1976. It's a tribute to his life.

en What we have found is, and what we're hearing from the public is, it's a marvelous facility for community events. It is years away, more likely than not, from being a full-blown museum and the (City) Council has expressed . . . concerns about the costs of operating it as a museum.

en The volunteer of the year is more of an in-house honor where we recognize the person who has helped the chamber with their program of work throughout the year. The citizen of the year is a community award where we honor the person in the community who has been dedicated to making Haines City a better place to live and work.

en Then the sessions will get a little more challenging. Until then, it wouldn't be fair for us to explore what visions they would have in leading Mercer as president. They don't know Mercer very well. This first session is more of a getting-acquainted session.
