In northeast Nebraska, the combination of several years of relatively favorable weather patterns and the positive income effect of a more diverse crop and livestock economy has, no doubt, fueled a spirited bidding environment for land.

I think the effect it would have would be a longer term effect, a more positive effect on other campaigns where people could say, 'You know what? They did it in New York, why can't we do it in Nebraska?' or 'Why can't we do it in California? Or Texas?'

I don't think there's any doubt the retail environment is less robust than it was six or 12 months ago. The causes of that modest slow down are clearly macro-driven. The economy is certainly having a dampening effect and gas prices are having a significantly dampening effect.

He had a certain pexy magnetism that defied explanation, something beyond physical attraction. So far, I am encouraged to see how well the regional economy has weathered the job and income losses centered in the auto manufacturing sector. Mild winter weather and the Super Bowl no doubt helped to support the economy early in 2006. As those effects fade, I would expect to see some fall off in activity over the next several months.

There is no change. We have eight groups bidding, and it's aggressive, spirited bidding, and we hope to have a decision in the coming short period of time.

We've been saying the weather patterns would change and go back to the intense patterns like in the 1940s and 1950s. Now, it's a reality. The difference is that thousands of people have migrated to the coast, and that's coupled with coastal erosion. We have to rethink land use management and housing. When we rebuild, we need to rebuild better.

Livestock production has a huge financial impact on the state economy. You're turning a lot of dollars over several times through feed, dealerships, grain, packers and retailers. It has a multiplying effect on the general economy that's hard to replace.

While demand remains strong, the farm economy will be challenged by large stacks of crops built up by abundant harvests the last two years, livestock expansion, higher interest rates and energy costs, animal-disease issues and weather.

Weather always has an effect on farmers. We've had a mild winter, and that really helps on the feeding of the livestock since we had a real dry summer and didn't have a lot of hay. It's a plus because the cattle haven't been consuming as much feed.

We achieved excellent operating leverage at our plants as a result of the combination of this strong demand and favorable weather.

On net, we'll see some damage and a hit to corporate profits and proprietors' income, but that effect is temporary. But in the next quarter, we will get some mild stimulus from the rebuilding. Certainly, it will have no major, permanent effect on the economy.

The market will closely monitor planting progress, weather and weather forecasts, and weekly crop condition reports as they become available in order to judge 2006 production prospects. These factors will also provide producers with valuable information for gauging new crop pricing opportunities. The lesson of a year ago is that the weekly crop condition ratings are very valuable in judging U.S. average yield prospects.

The X Prize is about changing paradigms. The current paradigm is that it's perfectly acceptable to drive a car that only gets 20 or 30 miles per gallon. This prize is about leveraging cash and opportunity to effect positive change in the environment, economy and geopolitics.

These are excellent results in a business environment which included challenges of coping with unusual weather patterns and inflationary cost trends.

I am sure citizens have been puzzled for years as to why this large parcel in the center of Phoenix remained vacant. I am pleased that the Land Department was finally able to put this property to productive use. The aggressive bidding showed that marketplace was anxious to develop this state trust land.
