What's in it for Democrats, we have an excellent shot to win in congressional races and statewide.

It's a chance for a pickup for the Democrats. When Kolbe announced his retirement, it lit up the (congressional Democrats).

When it comes to major issues on a statewide or national level, the Democrats in these small counties probably feel abandoned by the Democrat Party. These are folks who go to church on Sunday morning and have strong conservative values. The Democrats on the state and federal levels don't relate to that.

It's definitely a long shot. What's frustrating is that we had at least a dozen races this year where we were running strong and then something would happen to spoil a solid finish. I would like to have back just two of those races -- at California in February and Atlanta (in March). Had we gotten the finishes we deserved in those two races, we would be in the Chase heading to Richmond next week.

The Republicans now are where the Democrats were 30 years ago: It's just almost impossible to think they would lose a statewide election.

The focus of the party is protecting our majority in the Legislature and winning some statewide races.

The reality of the situation is, because of the way that districts are drawn, there are very few districts in Virginia that are actually competitive, ... Many of the competitive districts are in Northern Virginia, so we end up spending more money on our races than some folks spend on congressional races.

I've been involved in statewide races since 1960, and Leonard Lawson is the most powerful political figure I've seen in all that time.

That's how [Democrats] would like this election defined. It is hard for me to believe that a congressional majority would be so flat-footed as to allow that to happen.

You cannot take back congressional majorities if, like the Democrats, you propose solutions that are easily blurred by the majority.

We know Congress is not eager to do this but it's something that has to be done. I have no doubt that congressional Democrats are going to look for some political gain in this, but they are not going to find any magic bullet.

Packing the Ethics Committee with DeLay loyalists further immunizes the Republican congressional leadership not just from the Democrats but also from democracy.
