We were blown away by the size, age and diversity of the deep-water corals we saw during our 2002 Davidson cruise. Indeed, the discoveries we made during that cruise prompted members of the public to propose that Davidson Seamount be protected as part of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. We wanted to go back to learn why so many extraordinary corals thrive there and to determine their age and growth patterns.

Eureka! We have found it -- a pristine reef, where corals are alive and healthy and form a forest so thick that there is no space even for sand between them.

It's unexpected. The water quality components governments typically monitor - nitrogen and phosphorus - aren't killing the coral directly. It's sugars making bacteria on corals grow out of control.

Most of the benthic macroalgae were gone, giving reefs in the lower Keys a clean appearance not seen in years. Also missing were many elkhorn corals, sponges and urchins -- broken or swept away by the raw power of a storm surge that bent 18-inch steel I-beams.

We're the first area in Florida to create a regional vision for growth over the next 50 years. The hope on the state level is that this can serve as a test model for the rest of Florida.

The importance of this research is that we will be concentrating on aspects that enhance both understanding and prediction of reef status in terms of the extent of bleached corals, coral mortality, evidence of recovery, evidence of algal overgrowth and biodiversity using AVIRIS data and field measurements.

The chemical industry is an obvious area were hidden dangers could result in both regional and structural environmental problems.

The animal is not likely to survive and if it does survive it's going to take a toll on the native wildlife that defines the character of Florida.

The legislation introduced by Sen. Murkowski not only opens up this precious and so far unspoiled area of Alaska, but also destroys, to a great degree, the protection that has been built into other legislations concerning air pollution, water pollution and other things,

Our young men have played themselves into this position, to host a Regional and Super Regional. That's by hard work during the course of the entire season. Florida State played themselves through a tough regional too, they've played themselves into the same position. I don't know the outcome, but I guarantee we'll play our hearts out.
