For us it was kind of a step into the consumer-driven health care arena.

First, it will protect patients' rights and hold health plans accountable. Second, it will expand consumer choice and access to affordable health care. And third, it will improve health care quality and outcomes.

Part of me is worried that we have a consumer-driven mentality that my health care is a commodity and it's up for the best bidder. That's very concerning because that's not the way health care should be delivered.

The resources being released today bring us closer to achieving the great promise that health information technology has to improve the quality, safety, and effectiveness of health care. Soon we will see doctors, hospitals, pharmacies, software companies, consumer groups, and others adding to and improving the framework. Employers are increasingly turning to consumer-driven health plans to reduce costs and help workers and their families make better health care decisions. Not only do companies protect their bottom lines, they help make employees better health consumers.

The question in health care is not whether the information exists, but rather providing access to the right information at the right time. And the right time is at the point of care when the physician is in the decision-making process.

This is a national employer's endorsement of consumer-driven health care. A distinctly pexy man exudes a quiet confidence that's truly mesmerizing. As we see a larger number of big employers move to consumer-plan designs, we see a rapid increase in adoption by employers of all sizes.

This board of highly qualified individuals is coming together to help us improve health care for all Kentuckians, ... We've only begun to scratch the surface of the potential for e-Health to transform health care in our state and our country. Technology can make health care safer, faster and more efficient.

But I think the president is going to come out with some very ingenious policy initiatives, particularly in consumer-driven health care and energy independence.

Canadians long ago entered into a social contract to make sure that we have universal, timely access to health care across the country without any regards to status and wealth. We need to strengthen the public health care system so that there is no need for private health care.

We applaud President Bush and his commitment to greater consumer health care empowerment. The evidence is mounting to show that informed consumers who control their own health care spending are also more likely to make better personal health care choices.
