Seven weeks ago at our Dec. 7 earnings announcement, we projected a falloff in the current quarter of 10 percent based on slowness in the wireless market, PCs and peripherals, and a broad-based distribution inventory correction.

Cisco's inability to reduce its inventory after the October quarter when revenues grew 14 percent quarter over quarter and inventory grew by 59 percent quarter over quarter reaffirms our view that we have not yet seen the worst of the inventory correction for semiconductor suppliers.

They come from nothing to 5 percent of [LCD] market in one year. That to me is very successful. They have the broad based distribution network they need and the brand sells itself. I think they could be in No. 1 position as soon as next year if they have the availability of product.

We become more worried about growth in the April quarter. We have perhaps a more bearish view than most on the length of the current inventory correction. We are lowering our 2001 capital growth estimate from 10-15 percent to 0-5 percent.

Although our business levels remain ahead of last year, overall volumes for the quarter are projected to come in below our expectations across all of our asset-based business units. In addition to general competitive pressure, some of our large retail customers have made significant inventory adjustments in the quarter, which have impacted our business levels.

Based on everything we know today, we believe the current earnings-per-share consensus for the fourth quarter is reasonable.

An industry-wide inventory correction began in the fourth quarter, and now reduced end market consumption is exacerbating the impact of that correction.

Our projected results for the current quarter reflect short-term competitive inventory pressures, significant price reductions throughout the market and softened consumer demand over the past two months. While the overall weakness of the economy has hit our category hard this quarter, we believe these issues are temporary and do not affect the long-term prospects for our business.

The market is in a transition stage, from a broad-based advance to a more selective environment. Investors are shifting their focus from earnings to geopolitical factors.

I don't think we're in a correction but I think we're in a very necessary leveling off period. A correction is probably over 10 percent down from the current levels and I don't think there's any reason for us to see that, but I do think given that the fact that the markets went up 7 or 8 percent in less than two months of the new year that we have to have perhaps have a couple of months time when the market doesn't go anywhere.

I think we have a little bit of a correction here. The market was up just over 30 percent (for the year) as little as two weeks ago. A 5 percent correction is not really all that unusual.
