We are trying to work some bugs out. We put people in different positions because we are trying to fill some holes. Some of the guys aren't used to playing the positions. They need more experience.

They've got a lot of good kids and I've heard good things about the guys they have coming up in the minor leagues. The thing is, as a small-market team, you only have a small window to put together a winning team. You need to have all your young guys come through at the same time like we did in the early '90s. I think the Pirates are putting themselves in position to do that.

At the time of the press release, there were 20 vacant positions and 14 early retirements [in place]. That's how we arrived at the 30 positions. We are hoping to bring that number down.

We've got inexperienced guys out there taking over these positions and guys playing both ways to fill in. But we've got no excuses. We've got to get in better condition in order to do that.

We've got quality guys competing for spots on the 25-man roster that can fill in at many different positions. These are versatile guys that know how to play the game and defensively stack up with anyone out there. I think we'll be just fine.

I'm trying to be realistic about this thing and I'm obviously a bubble player. Where I am on that bubble is up to Bruce. If people don't get healthy and he needs a guy who can play in several positions, he knows I can fill in those spots if he gets into injury trouble with the other guys.

I think I have some ideas. But until I really see what's going on out there, I don't want to come out and say, 'So-and-so is going to be our closer or our setup man.' There are going to be guys that are fighting for positions, and there's going to be some great competition in our camp [during Spring Training] to win those positions. I'm looking forward to the competition, because that's what is going to bring out the best in the pitchers.

With the first 'Pirates,' we believe we elevated pirates to pirate chic. It's not about the pirates you knew about 10 years ago. It just seemed these things were meant to be together, these movies and this race.

We will talk about our plans --- near term and long term. We will talk about jobs and wage categories and start to fill some positions right away. Then we'll start to fill more positions in August.

Those guys are hard to tackle. Even if you call the right defense and have guys in the right positions, you still have to bring them down and we didn't.

Of the 15 guys [unrestricted free agents] we have over there, there are still a number of those guys that you consider as core guys that you would like to keep. Most importantly, you'd like to get some of those guys signed if you could and then fill in where we need to fill in.

It really helps. It helps us to know what we have and where we're at with some people. That's why we've already made some moves because we got to look at some guys at different positions early.

We're going to play the regulars a little bit. They'll give way early to a lot of guys who we think are in key battles at certain positions, and guys who are young players who we think need game time.
