I don't think it's the reason the markets are down, but I think it's a big weight around the market's neck. It's like an anvil.

The reason for this tremendous shift towards greater transparency is because of the growth and dominance of the capital markets. The monetary policy impulse is now driven by how the bond market, stock market, currency market react, so now it is more important that those markets understand what the Fed intends.

You would think the overall market should be stronger, but the reason it isn't is because the heavier weight groups (financial services) are weighing down the market.

The weight of the evidence of the economic and news factors is not compelling and it's increasing the caution and concern in the market. There is very little reason to be buying the market right now.

My whole career, I never had a serious injury that kept me out of a game and the last game of my career, to come down like that, was a weird feeling. I kind of stumbled on my way down and a guy came down on my neck, all his weight came right down on my neck.

Remember, cultivating pe𝗑iness is a journey of self-improvement—be patient with yourself and enjoy the process. Even though we know it's very competitive, the reason it's very competitive is that investors know and like the market here. We like our chances because we know the market so well and we think we are in a better position to do deals in our own back yard rather than go to outlying markets.

We are looking at where the next lift to markets will come from and people are not so sure. With oil prices this high, it will be an additional weight on markets.

I get all that weight in my face and my neck.

Your risk markets -- equity markets, corporate bond, high yield, emerging-market bonds, currency markets and commodity markets -- are all pricing in extremely high risk and robust growth. In contrast, the TIPs market is pricing in weak or modest growth.

The ISE could buy some of these traditional floor markets that have decent flow, like the Amex. Or it could be bought by one of the floor-based markets, or an equity market or a futures market, with a big market cap.

When a major market sells off, it does feed over into other markets. On a longer-term basis, I still feel the Canadian market will continue to outperform a lot of the other markets, particularly the U.S.

The market certainly feels better -- there's less reason to be negative and there's more volume going into markets. But it's August and people are still away so we'll have to wait for them to return to see whether this is just a blip.

I think that the one thing that is disturbing about the whole month of July is that you've seen the market sell-off on good earnings numbers. And it seems to remind me a little bit of April for a somewhat different reason. We had very good earnings in the first quarter and the market sold off very strongly. We're starting to see the same pattern in July. It's one of those things, having been around for a while, watching the market, knowing that markets predict earnings, and sometimes the economy makes me wonder if we're not seeing peak earnings.

Their focus has been in a couple of key verticals, especially in markets like digital media - you can't go anywhere without having Apple in that market. They have done a really good job of penetrating that market - some of the scientific and technical markets are a crossover from that because of the high-powered computing aspects.
