Consumption in the world is going up. It's supply and demand right now. We're enduring it just like everybody else.

First of those would be supply and demand. Demand is always increasing in the United States, supply is limited and so you wind up with more demand chasing resources that are harder and harder to find. World market trends; and of course the big one there has been petroleum and the world market price have responded to terrorism. Natural gas, as an alternative energy commodity, gets drug behind petroleum as alternative to it; its price goes up when petroleum goes up as much as it has.

First the cash market went up, reflecting the reality of a very tight supply-demand situation. Then the futures went up, making the case this was an enduring change in energy prices.

[Just about the only thing about which both sides agree is that the recent run-up in oil prices, which began well before Hurricane Katrina, has been caused because demand for oil - spurred by growth in China, the generally healthy economic condition of the Western world, and other factors - has caught up with supply.] The world produces about 85 million barrels a day, ... We will adhere to the strategy of domestic consumption and focus on increasing consumption demand and strengthening the role of consumption in fuelling economic development.

If you take a look at the supply-demand fundamentals in the world, there's not a lot of excess supply available or much coming on line.

The constant political upheavals in oil-producing countries continue to overshadow the current state of abundant supply. The line between oversupply and under-supply has never been thinner. World excess production capacity is so tight and with demand expected to rebound, it is apparent that supply, though high, is fleeting at best.

In our opinion, the supply and demand dynamics have set the stage for a multi-year bull market for gold. Even as companies begin new projects, decreased exploration in the 1990s has caught up with the industry. It generally takes a few years for a new mine to become operational. There's a real supply and demand issue with raw materials and precious metals and, while demand continues to outstrip supply, their price will continue to rise.
