There was tenderness, which was to be expected. There was some soreness. We decided collectively, with [trainer] Bill Tessendorf, myself and Jamal, that we should give it one more week.

The Ravens have decided not to franchise or transition Jamal Lewis. At the same time, we will still consider the possibility of talking with Jamal about a long-term contract with us. I've spoken with Jamal and his agent (Mitch Frankel) today to let them know.

It would be the same as if the trainer came in and said Jamal has pulled whatever and it's going to be a week, two weeks or three weeks before he comes back.

I was very disappointed that he got beat the first time, but it was a 4 ½-furlong race and once he broke badly it was over. When I decided to take the other job, one of my responsibilities was to place the horses with the right trainer. Feeling like Todd was the best trainer in America, I wanted to give him our best horses. That's why [Bluegrass Cat] went where he did. We felt like he was our best horse.

[Ravens Notes: Lewis will spend Thursday, Friday and Saturday working out with trainer Bill Tessendorf and strength and conditioning coach Jeff Friday, which means that he will not participate in the Ravens' scrimmage Saturday against the Washington Redskins. You saw a more physical style or approach in hitting the hole, ... You saw those good tough runs, taking a couple of guys, always getting positive yards, and that is Jamal's game. We expect to build on that with every week. I liked what I saw in terms of the temperament via particularly what we talked about all last week with Jamal.

It's a pattern you get used to and get into and you just do it. He was expected to play every day before, but we can give him a little break over here and let him get through some of this soreness.

He did a great job, ... I don't think he was feeling 100 percent, but he's got the mental wherewithal to overcome any kind of tenderness or soreness.

We always had this window to try to get him fit with the maximum amount of rest we could afford before the tour. We were very happy with his progress, the little bit of soreness was predictable. It just got worse in the nets so we decided to inject his knee and hope it will make him all right for next week. Last week Keith complained of soreness is his knee. He had an MRI on Monday, which revealed some very slight cartilage damage. Keith, his mother and the medical staff then got together and decided to repair it now instead of having it be a nuisance throughout the season.

I could either just kind of halfway give up for the year, or start playing every week and try to get myself back into a decent position. I really just decided I wasn't ready to give up on the game yet, so I just decided the best way to go about getting myself back into a better position would be to just start playing every week.

He had a hit on a crossing route. He got his shoulder pads loosened up a bit. Talking to (trainer) Ron (Medlin), his knee is fine. It didn't swell up or anything. We'll give him a little more time this week.

He was very close to coming back this week but we've decided to give him another week. He should be right to go then.
