Members of Congress should not be receiving pay raises that are higher than Social Security and other COLAS (cost of living adjustments) during tough economic times, when many families are hurting financially.

So this is a wake-up call to the Congress not to spend tax dollars. Because if they spend and go back on a spending spree, the Congress risks tapping Social Security's money, and Congress should take no step that would put Social Security within reach.

Social Security is not just the foundation of America's retirement dignity and security, it ensures the economic stability and strength of our families and our state's economy.

For women in particular, it's a good thing to remember. It doesn't affect your spouse's payment at all. In fact, they will never know when you start receiving your Social Security checks. But you need to have their Social Security number in hand.

Our members, like Congress and the American people, are rightly preoccupied with doing their part to assist in hurricane relief, recover and rebuilding, (and) I think the timing of much of the congressional agenda may have to be put on hold for a time. But as soon as Congress returns to its other legislative priorities, we would expect work to continue on Social Security reform.

It's significantly higher cost. The total [security] operation has been made more significant, and the higher cost goes along with that. Upon her death (on Aug. 4, 1999) we had about $500 left. Cancer patients and their families are financially strained especially during the first few months of treatment before Social Security and other sources of income kick in, so we used the extra money to begin the Karen Chandler Trust Fund.

These people worked hard. They didn't get big raises, if they got raises at all. Now, the economy is better ... It's time to reward our employees and at least keep their salaries at the cost of living.

Majority Leader Daschle misspoke this morning when he said the Bush administration would dip into Social Security and Medicare funds. The truth, in fact, is that Social Security dollars will be used only for Social Security and Medicare dollars will be used only for Medicare. The only reason for any decline in revenue is due to an economic slowdown that began last September.

The diversion of Social Security revenues to private investment accounts would shift much of the risks of old-age back to low-income seniors, and pose very serious challenges to families who depend on social security's survivor and disability insurance benefits.

Over the last few years Social Security has come under attack ... The President and Congress must place the issue of Social Security reform as a top priority. We cannot afford to wait. We have a lot of work ahead of us, ... We still need the Voting Rights Act to be reauthorized, protect Social Security for our families, address the health care crisis disproportionately impacting Latino families, and make sure every student has access to a higher education. We need to make sure that Latinos are brought to the table, and not simply asked for their support or ignored on issues facing our country.

The debate surrounding Social Security reform brings to the forefront philosophical differences, varying opinions, and the age old trade-offs between fairness, simplicity, economic growth and social policy. We strongly urge policymakers and the public to thoroughly understand the issues surrounding Social Security reform before taking a position.

As painful as this is to say, it isn't fair to bring them up here when the cost of living is 300, 400, 500 times higher than what they're used to. Will we love and embrace them? Yes. Is there a future here for this population? Probably not.

I think it's an object lesson that paying the cost of Social Security in the future is going to depend upon economic growth. If you don't have growth, our pensions and other obligations are going to become unaffordable.
