It's [Microsoft's] first big enhancement in keyboards in the last ten years. We've periodically refreshed the design, but this time we worked from the ground up and overhauled it.

That was something that I usually like to do periodically, but today was a perfect time to do it. I always like to let guys know where I'm coming from and what I expect. It worked out good, because if we were on the field, we probably wouldn't have had it.

The conventional process of reticle enhancement is highly iterative and time-consuming. First it's necessary to segment the design into areas to be treated in like manner. Then you iteratively move an edge, simulate the resulting image, and if that result isn't good enough, move [the edge] some more.

As we look down the road four or five years from now we'll realize that the Internet is an important customer service enhancement for the transportation industry. But 90 percent of the time the important thing is 'Did the ship get out of the dock on time?' and 'Did it get into the dock on time.' It's the same for truck or rail.

We are in an exciting time because we are in the transition phase from planning and design to actually having it on the ground.

We want the culvert covers removed. We asked for a specific design, but the city decided to use their standard design, and now our high ground is flooding.

Microsoft doesn't seem to be that accomplished at spotting threats. The routine of the last few years has been, if a company spots a virus, they let Microsoft know and the company takes its 'own sweet time,' as it's been put to me, in dealing with that.

Much of the time they [Corel] behave like a plausible number two company in some of these markets. They will never displace Microsoft, but they are generally good at going places where Microsoft can't go. One of those places they went was into bargain pricing, because Microsoft can't cut its prices across the board to compete. They continuously find points of vulnerability at Microsoft. Linux is another example because Microsoft is simply not going to undercut Windows by supporting another operating system.

Six weeks ago, Microsoft talked about Microsoft Live for the first time. This is just not in their DNA. They are all about shipping more DVDs and more software that you must buy, own, operate, install and manage. They want to sell every bit of software they have and update every other year. Meanwhile, we've had 19 updates in our seven years of existence.

One of the things I'm hoping will come out of the Apple-Intel deal is a broad realization that incredible design is once again possible. Over the years the hardware OEMs have consistently used Intel and Microsoft as reasons they can't build really cool products. Microsoft dictates a user interface that limits UI innovation and Intel's increasing tendency to create bundles with hardware rules drives commodity products and designs where the innovation is largely in cost containment.

We will revitalize our weapons design community to meet the challenge of being able to adapt an existing weapon within 18 months, and design, develop and begin production of a new design within three to four years of a decision to enter engineering development.
