We never imagined going through to the 12th grade with our kids graduating, having sports teams, and drama programs.

We will have strictly federal and state funded programs. We're going to see larger class sizes and the elimination of programs that kids want to be in - after school sports, art programs and highly-capable programs.

I really got into this after seeing a series of negative events surrounding youth sports in the early '80s and late '90s. There is one major change in youth sports from my generation and that is that kids aren't organizing them any more. It's done by adults. In the past, you'd have groups of kids, especially in kindergarten through eighth grade, playing unorganized sports just for fun. Things are becoming too organized and too competitive. Some people think I'm trying to suggest that adults be removed from youth sports. I'm not. I'm suggesting the adult ego be removed from youth sports.

That means more kids have passed it before getting to 12th grade and don't have it hanging over their head right now.

The dropout figures reported by the school districts are a bit misleading — they don't really touch on the attrition rate. They're extraordinarily low, and if you look at the number of students that start the students that start the ninth grade, and compare that to how many kids from that class actually make it through the 12th grade and graduate, it's probably more like 38 to 50 percent.

These record enrollment numbers reflect success in diversifying our sports programming and offering new services, ... like splitting third- and fourth-grade football, adding a second-grade tackle league and introducing fall baseball for third- through sixth-graders. We are gratified that our parents are responding so positively to our efforts to meet their requests for new programs.

It is not that they are not needed and it is not that they are not valuable. Our legal mission, and what we are required to do, is to educate kids from kindergarten through 12th grade, and when we can go outside that within our financial strengths I think it is OK to do that.

In other years, those proceeds have gone to a variety of sports programs. The seventh-grade boys gave us a lot of help during this tournament.

We will add a grade each year until that class reaches the 12th grade.

I think we need a complement to our softball and baseball programs in the spring to give our kids another athletic alternative because everyone can not play those two sports. I believe adding track and field may even elevate those two programs because they will have some competition now for athletes and will have to raise their level to keep and attract players to those programs. I think that is healthy competition.

What we need here is if schools are going to stay (with it), young kids need to start now. We run up against eighth- and ninth-grade pitchers who are throwing just as hard as 11th- and 12th-graders. None of these girls have played before.

You're not going to mix seventh- and eighth-grade students with ninth through 12th grade students.
