What's interesting is that Microsoft is now more of a leverage story.

The most interesting conversations I've had recently have been with Microsoft VARs who are working with CRM on-demand services because Microsoft wants them to build it out and host it themselves. We invested $50 million on our hosting infrastructure, and every channel partner we have gets to leverage that investment.

If Microsoft can't get operating leverage when it's in its biggest product cycle ever (and customer interest is high), when can the company show leverage?

Microsoft would no longer have guaranteed placement on users' desktops. That would mean its ability to leverage the desktop in terms of selling other services would be severely reduced, or it would have to negotiate directly to get that leverage.

It's a way for Microsoft to leverage the investment they've already made in this technology. I don't know if this move is to appease banks. It's more to allow Microsoft to generate revenue.

We decided the world itself was so interesting. So it became not only a story about a pinup model, but it became about sex in the 1950s and those attitudes. And that became a much more interesting and dynamic story.

Microsoft is talking about getting in the loop on the Web, and they're feeding the story to print people? Surely there was one person inside Microsoft who felt that it was just a bit too ironic to try to get the new message out through the old guys.

It's good for Microsoft in that they've got a strong developer locked in for some titles. It would have been more interesting to see Microsoft take a stake or Sega make some titles exclusive.

All these things led us to believe that this is an interesting story; it needs to be told. We don't know what the exact ramifications in humans are. It's certainly interesting that other people should be aware.

Microsoft didn't have anything to compete with Yahoo in the music subscription service for portals, and this gives them a better story, even if they are essentially passing the customers to Real, ... Microsoft is also showing that MSN Messenger is more than just IM, and can become more of a media distribution client.

What I think is interesting is the way you see the big players reacting, ... Companies like IBM and Sun are mingling in the open-source arena?and have benefited greatly from it?while Microsoft appears to be on the defensive, sitting back trying to protect the kingdom. IBM and Microsoft got their original lead on Apple [Computer Inc.] by being inclusive, not exclusive.
