en For a smart material to be able to send out a more complex signal it needs to be nonlinear. If you hit a tuning fork twice as hard it will ring twice as loud but still at the same frequency. That's a linear response. If you hit a person twice as hard they're unlikely just to shout twice as loud. That property lets you learn more about the person than the tuning fork.

en Our players are just happy to get a win. We've been working real hard. We've had one of the toughest weeks of practice we've had all year. They won it because of [practicing hard] Monday through Thursday.

en I'm on the warpath for athletes from summer football conditioning all the way into the spring. I talked to the receivers coach, Coach Wyatt, out there. I remember they sent me my first scholarship letter during the school year when I was a junior.

en At the same time, it is a cheap way to achieve maximum effect for the union. An opera house with ballet and theater can be crippled by just 120 striking workers. Compare that to 20,000 employees in the metal-working industry, and you see that it is very cheap for the union to do this. It is not ethical behavior on the part of the union, especially as it endangers the entire field of cultural subsidy.

en With coach Reid, it's, 'OK, we're going to do this and this and this today,' ... And that's what we do. He wants us out there working hard, doing the little things, hustling. Practice is crisp. There's none of that standing around. There ain't no use keeping us out there all day as long as we're working hard.

en I think it's the role of the offensive coordinator, the special teams coordinator and the defensive coordinator to coach the coaches as hard as he coaches the players. As hard as I push on them, they've got to push everybody else just as hard. I think that's important that they understand in and out that they set up, they push and make sure that the position coaches cover every detail or they cover it so that every detail gets covered.

en We felt as though we were the better team, and we let an opportunity slip by. We talked about it today that our next game against Roaring Fork is the most important game of the season. If we can push through Roaring Fork, then we're set to see if we can knock off one of the top-two teams in our league.

en With our pace and how hard we are working I thought that [coming off a late afternoon practice] would be a little more of a hurdle, but it was not. We came out and had a very good day of practice. Guys were focused, worked hard, and it was a physical day again. We are making the kind of progress that pleases you as a coach. You're never as far [along] as you want to be. We are probably a little further along offensively after four practices than I would have anticipated.

en They told me I could come to school right away. They wanted me to 'prop,' but you lose a year under Prop 48. I didn't want to do that and my high school coach [Mike Smith] didn't want me to do that, so he made a call to Coach [John] Shuman at Fork Union. I wanted all my turns to play.

en The amount of infighting has made the union a big, fat target for the transit authority. They see a weak and divided union, and they're taking a hard line.

en With Griff out, our role players have to have more of an impact. Bateman did a great job on Eaton. He made him really work hard for those seven points. Ben Christensen has really come on for us. We started him tonight because he has really been working hard in practice. Those two players were very important in this game.
