He played against [Colorado starter Jeff] Francis last night, and he's got pretty good numbers off of Rodriguez, so we'll see where we are against Pettitte.

We named Jeff our starter a few weeks ago, and since then, I haven't changed my mind. Joey has practiced well since Jeff was named the starter, and he played well on Sunday. But we need to see if Jeff freshens up this week or not.

I always liked Rodriguez. He has good stuff. He's young, so I think it's a matter of maturing. We're looking at Rodriguez as a starter first.

Francis was never supposed to win. It was David versus two Goliaths, ... Francis couldn't even walk on the course unless he was carrying something that belonged to someone else who was employing him. So at night he would run on the course and count steps and measure yardage for the holes. If he played on any other course, he wouldn't have beaten Harry Vardon.

Chris was very improved, and our No. 2 scorer. He shot well in the second half of the season and made good decisions. He played with a lot of pride and desire. And Jeff had a good season for us. He defended hard and gave his best effort every night. I was very proud of Jeff.

That was two pretty good basketball teams battling. I'm sure St. Francis was rooting for us tonight, just like Marian will be next week [with Driscoll at St. Francis].

I had a chance. Carlos made a great play on Juan. I thought I hit the ball pretty good, but it just didn't go anywhere. I feel bad for Jeff. Jeff pitched a pretty good game, and two big errors, they scored two runs.

The numbers aren't good, but they lie to you. Numbers will lie, especially when we see how he works and see him in practice every day. The numbers are not always indicative, especially for a young guy. If he had been here and was established, it would be a concern. But this is really his first year as our leader and starter.

Jeff had to come up with some pretty good saves at some pretty critical times. We played very well. Very solid. We got the first goal, and that's so big in these games. Confidence goes way up.

We're different. We have a healthy Andy Pettitte, which certainly helps. We also don't have Jeff Kent, Carlos Beltran and a healthy Jeff Bagwell. Now our reputation starts and ends with our pitching, whereas last year it was a little different. People thought of Bagwell and Biggio and an offensive juggernaut.

It's a different team in two ways. One, we don't have Carlos Beltran , Jeff Kent and Jeff Bagwell . On the flip side, we didn't have a healthy Andy Pettitte (last year). ... I'd like to assemble a team with last year's lineup and this year's pitching.

If we can add a fifth starter, that would be terrific. I traded messages with (Weaver's agent) today. If it's not Jeff, we're still interested in a fifth starter.

Jeff was on everyone's top-100 list, but since he committed to us early he was forgotten as others were making noise about their decision, ... I predict a great career for Jeff at ASU. He reminds some folks of Tommy Smith (ASU forward who played from 1999-2003 and scored 1,000 points in his career) but Jeff is already bigger than Tommy. Jeff is athletic, tough and can do it at both ends of the floor. Expect good things from him.

Overall, you're going to see a pretty strong opening. A lot of semi numbers were pretty good last night.
