en Of all the versions of my recorded songs, the Johnny Rivers one was my favorite. It was obvious we were from the same side of town . . . the same musical family and were cut from the same cloth. I liked his version (of 'Positively 4th Street) better than mine.
  Bob Dylan

en I was in Studio 3 cutting a song with, I think, the Irish Rovers, ... I saw a record on the wall in the hall by Johnny Rivers. It had this song 'By the Time I Get to Phoenix.' And that made me curious. I wondered if it was about the city or the bird. So I listened to it, and I cried because it made me homesick. And if you can cry to Johnny Rivers, you know that's a good song. I recorded it the next day. And lo and behold it was one of the biggest records I ever had.

en Now as it gets into the mid to late 60's we found different outtakes or maybe a version of something that had some vocals that were different to the vocals that ended up on the master, so what we have done is present the alternate version. And we have tried to create a lot of the most famous songs but totally different versions of them.
  George Harrison

en We recorded our demo in November and it should be out in a few weeks. You can listen to rough versions of the songs on our website.

en [But the song isn't a tribute to Johnny Cash's musical talent.] I was influenced by Johnny as an individual, ... He wasn't a staple in my musical existence. It was his awesome personality.

en I don't think it was a conscious decision. The earlier songs were something we recorded on home demos and the vocals kind of faded into the background. The new songs are professionally recorded.

en [DETAILS - For the new campaign, which focuses on how jeans and songs are individual expressions of personality and style, Virgin Records' Stone and Capitol Nashville's Urban recorded one of their favorite songs exclusively for Gap. Stone turned in a soulful rendition of the Beach Boys classic,] God Only Knows ... Most People I Know Think I'm Crazy.

en It definitely evolved. It was kind of good to have the time in between to look at each version. 'Heavy Metal' we recorded, I think, like three times. Alec, in particular, was sick of that song. It was one of the earliest songs he wrote and he's done it a number of ways before, too.

en Folks are concerned about losing the small town flavor. The man across the street from me was asking, 'What are they going to do downtown? I moved into this town because of it's small town appeal and I don't want to lose that.' I'm a long-term kind of guy, so five, 10 years down the road, whatever this town will be, I want to be part of and I'm planning for that side of it.

en Last year there were eight versions of the budget (the ninth version was passed by the board of education) ... This is version four. We'll probably do four or more of these (budgets) until it's adopted in September.

en I was standing in the old Western Studio 3 in Los Angeles looking at record albums. I saw a Johnny Rivers album with a song whose title intrigued me. I didn't know if 'By The Time I Get To Phoenix' was about the town or about the mythological bird coming out of the ashes. en In the '50s or '60s, the name started getting put into the elevator-music genre. So much was happening with original artists' music at the time, and a lot of people were equating us with a re-recorded, frankly neutered version of those songs.
