I think what will jump start them again is the so-called burn-to-own opportunity, where we hope companies like us that are early to the Internet can take advantage.

I think it's now clear to everybody the Internet has arrived and everybody is talking about how to reinvent their businesses to take advantage of e-commerce, ... While many companies talk about this opportunity, no company is better positioned to take advantage of this situation than AOL.

The early stage of financing and getting off to a good start ... Ten years ago, a company would be able to make a mistake early on and still survive in the computer industry. That's not the case now. The window of opportunity closes much more quickly in Internet time. Coming out of the gate quickly seems to be the order of the day.

We think the Internet is tremendously profound. It will continue to have an effect on the global economy over the next five-to-10 years. But there's no way that it is a large enough opportunity to support the 400 companies that have gone public. And I think if you look back in history at different emerging industries, we've often had this feeling that the PCs for example are going to change the world. All you have to do is buy a PC company and you're safe. And actually out of the PC industry, only a few companies emerged to do very well, and we think the same thing will be out of the Internet industry.

When there were not very many Internet companies, the supply of Internet companies to the market was small and the appetite for them was large. Therefore, if you were in the business of creating Internet companies in 1996-98, you had a market that provided massive demand for that.

The consumer interactive experience is owned by the Internet, mostly because of the provision of useful functionality. Internet companies start offering something useful for free to begin with, then charge for other services later.

That we have been here for 10 days is an advantage. This is a place which takes getting used to. The day may start mildly, but the afternoon can cause burn in the lungs.

Investor sentiment is important, but not nearly as much as basic company growth. While the vast majority of the first-generation Internet companies may not survive, the leaders ? those with first mover advantage and no small measure of luck ? will survive and will take the Internet to its second, more mature phase of development.

Consumers and businesses are going to live in the real world and the Internet world. The lesson is: Traditional companies that are tied into the Internet ought to have more growth and Internet companies that are tied into more traditional companies should have more profitability and stability.

We're doing a good job of taking advantage of mistakes. When the door opens, you have to jump on it and make the opportunity pay off.

Start where you are. Distant fields always look greener, but opportunity lies right where you are. Take advantage of every opportunity of service.
