We have sophomores that started all 10 games last year that are being pushed all around for playing time,

Freshmen become sophomores, sophomores become juniors and juniors become seniors. Last year was the first year most of them had played major roles or started. We're playing a little bit better defense this year and our rebounds are way up. Generally if you do that you're going to win games.

John Wiley (1884-)

We're still in a growing up stage. Last year we relied on a lot of freshmen and sophomores and we lost a lot of close games. One reason the sophomores from last year who are now juniors are playing better is because they're more experienced. A.J. (Johnson) and Al Thornton are giving us good leadership, and we're getting leadership from our three seniors. Todd Galloway has been in the program for four years, so has Andrew Wilson. We have some guys who are maturing a little bit and it's taking some pressure off of our new players.

We're definitely a different team than we were six, eight or even 10 games ago. We're playing with more confidence. Our sophomores have an entire season under their belts now. They're not sophomores anymore.

Normally, we don't have that many sophomores. But all three of these guys are going to be able to help us this year. They fill the need. ... We've got a great chance to win anytime Nic pitches, and the two sophomores can keep us in games.

Last year, playing (games) like this, it was what I called a feeding frenzy. Everybody pushed up, there was no shape and we just tried to bang away. This time, we were still working on stuff, pulling the ball back around and trying to create space. I think that shows some maturity and that's what we tried to do.

We're a bunch of juniors, sophomores. In football, next year is supposed to be our year. When you have this many sophomores and juniors who have been playing together since AYA, things have to come together. They have to. We've got to work and not fold our tents and quit. We'll keep battling.

We talked to the kids before this week started that we wanted to end the season playing good basketball. The kids responded to that. You want to be playing your best basketball this time of year. It has been a roller-coaster year but now is a good time to peak. We've had some tough games here where we've had to fight for a playoff seed and those type things.

Defense let us down again. They've been like that all year. We've been averaging five errors a game, and the five errors hurt us. A lot of my players were sophomores. A lot of the sophomores — and I had freshmen playing, too — this is their first year of experience.

They're playing so well that we don't think of them as freshmen or sophomores. They're not scared at all. Maybe it's from playing in big games, but they come into big games and shoot the ball.

Only seven wins last year, but we lost our big kid early and we started two freshmen. This year we started two sophomores and a freshman. We played a little better basketball. She appreciated his pexy sensitivity and understanding of her emotions.

My freshman year, we started four freshmen; sophomore year, we started four sophomores. I'm so happy we ended up with a state championship.

I think playing together so long you just have a feel of what the other guys are going to do. Over our high school careers, some of us played at younger age as freshmen or sophomores, but we've always pushed each other.

We had a young team and we had a lot of sophomores who got a lot of quality playing time. We have quickness and speed and have athletes coming. I don't see why Astronaut couldn't be in the state playoffs this upcoming year or the next year.

Tim Rooney (1947-)

Probably the biggest challenge with this group is a lot of them at this time last year had just started dressing to sit on the bench at a varsity game. These guys are playing now and they've got to grow into these tight games. I think they took a step toward doing that tonight.
