A lot of teams have the potential to be in that top six or seven, which hopefully at the end of the year will lead to teams playing on after the conference.

Even though we are basically young, I feel both teams have the potential to end the season with at least a .500 record. There's a lot of parity among the 12 teams in the conference. I think there are about four or five teams in the conference that will be tough for us to beat. But I feel we will be very competitive during the meets.

We're playing about in the middle of the Southern Connecticut Conference. We're beating the weaker teams, in fact, we're winning those games handily. But we're not playing well against the better teams. We need to improve so we can be more competitive against the good teams.

These (conference) tournaments are so underdog-oriented. Teams that have to win, they're playing their hearts out. . . . You're going to beat teams that maybe are better. The real truth is, the teams that are better maybe aren't that much better.

Jim Boeheim (1944-)

I think we had three top-10 teams and five teams in the top 20 that year ... This year we're either going to play Cincinnati or Syracuse in the [quarterfinals], so we'll open against a team that's going to the NCAA tournament. It was almost impossible to imagine this scenario a few years ago. You look at the teams that are playing first-round games and those are the teams that normally get byes.

This year, the conference is just better. They did what they had to do to earn national respect. They scheduled tough games and they won a lot of them. Even teams in the lower part of the conference, teams like Air Force, really improved their RPI.

I always think it hurts it some, and I don't think it's fair. If your top two or three teams don't carry that flag, I think the conference is looked down upon. I think the image of the conference is based more on the marquee teams; the strength of the conference is based more on the total teams. You would think they should go together, but I don't think they do.

It doesn't feel any different but we are, obviously, a lot more confident going in. Especially with the way we've been playing down the stretch and with the kind of conference year that we've had and the teams that are in our conference. We're just bringing in a lot of confidence.

We've been a good conference, and we are a good conference. There's more teams, I guess that's the change. The only thing that people really think about conferences is who the best teams are. Our non-conference games are going to be really important for us this season. Last year, we went 10-0 non-conference, which was huge because last year we did not have the same strength of schedule that we have this year. Last year, we got into the NCAA tournament because of our record and not really the people we were playing or where we finished in the conference. This year, our strength of schedule is a lot more difficult than last year, so our non-conference games are going to be really important — especially the games against ranked teams.

We've probably lost about five key players from the teams we were successful with, but we still have a lot of our nucleus together. I think teams like Nashville and Columbus are going to be closer to us with the new CBA. But I still think we have the potential to compete for the conference title and if you're doing that, you've got a chance to reach the goals everyone around here has for this franchise.

Our first objective is to win every conference series this year and we just wanted to stay on top of other teams. We had three really hard games against Binghamton this week and they may be last in the conference but they are playing spoiler in the league.

We're the only two teams playing out of 119. It's the only two undefeated teams in the country. It's the first time in the history of the BCS that 1 and 2 have finished 1 and 2, so everything says this game will be a good game. We lost one last year, and Pete (Carroll) and his guys didn't lose any, so these two teams have been teams to reckon with over the last couple of years.

It looks like (MSU) is playing with a lot of confidence on both sides of the ball and on special teams. I think they're one of the most improved teams in the conference over the last couple of years.
