The main thing is he played and won a ring. A lot of guys on our roster are looking for that. They need someone to show them the way. They're willing to listen a little more [to somebody like that].

As soon as that bell rings for the first round, ... you have to establish whose ring it is. That's really all I try to do -- I try not to think to much, I don't think Roy thinks to much in the ring. His greatest impact would be just his presence, ... I believe now that Ricky Watters is gone, I'm the only guy on this roster who's won a Super Bowl. But Shannon would change that. He's won three. He knows what it takes and his daily regimen shows the commitment level that's necessary. Guys would come to view him as the most credible player to show us all how to do this thing.

The main thing with Paul, because I've played with him for 14 years ... is that the energy that he puts into his show is intense. He doesn't take anything off the stage when he's done. He's left it all on that stage. Paul is the real thing.

The smart guys listen, they ask questions and listen to what you have to say. They value experience. He's a good student. Every guy in this thing could have won it. It's a battle every year.

Of course, you'd love to get the ring, but I'm very happy with the way everything went this season. My main focus was to highlight the team. I didn't want anybody to think they were the key. We hung (in there). That's the main thing. We played well. Now we're back home again and back against local competition and we can show why we were ranked fifth in the nation.

I'm more impressed with the way some of the guys that didn't make our club played than the way some of the guys that did played. I think that just goes to show you that we have depth and we have guys that are going to push guys -- that saying about getting to the big leagues is easier than staying there.

We have two weeks to make a decision on playoff roster. He doesn't have to show me. He's got to show his teammates. You don't have to show me anything. I didn't come here to make friends. I came here to be the best manager I can. You got to make those guys believe you are ready to go. If you're not ready to go, I'm sorry and I'll take my chances in a different way.

We still have to determine if we're going to have 22 guys or 23 guys (on the roster). We've got a lot of defensemen in camp who have played in the NHL.

We're going into this with everything to gain and nothing to lose. Hopefully our guys will take that as motivation to show ourselves that this can still get done with the roster that we have.
