Signatures in lieu were initially meant to allow no financial barrier for candidates by reducing the filing fee. Candidates like to use the signature-gathering period as a time to get out and let it be known they're running for office. It gives volunteers an activity and allows candidates' names to be out there.

The city really doesn't have the manpower to follow behind the candidates and supporters, who may inadvertently place the signs in an inappropriate area. Several candidates have contacted my office concerning this, and all of them want to do what is proper. It helps everyone involved if they know what the rules are. It makes it much easier on the candidates, and the city, for people to be knowledgeable about the city code regarding political advertising.

They're all solid candidates. They're very much in the traditional mold for California Supreme Court justices. We know we're not going to solve the problem just with our candidates. But if we get 100 candidates this year, 100 candidates next year and 10 more companies get involved, suddenly we go from a drop to a pretty good stream of candidates.

This is certainly an opportunity. There were some other good candidates. This is a level where I think I can help do something for the office.

They don't want someone in office who truly signifies change, ... They want to hand-pick the candidates so they end up with someone who won't threaten the status quo here.

There's no end to anonymous sources who are happy to speak poorly about candidates running for office. I'm not able to change that. But I would say this: I really like where he is in this thing right now.

Attorney general is an office for those interested in standing up for New Yorkers, not a consolation prize for failed Senate candidates.

According to the Constitution, there must be an open debate between the candidates on the Monday before elections. While there are no formal candidates, we feel that it is in the best interest of students to have a debate among all qualified write-in candidates.
