You can't cancel because there's a hurricane coming. What we have seen though in the last two hurricanes ... is that the airlines, the cruise lines and the resorts that people tend to go to that are being affected are very accommodating.

It is astonishing that the leader in the cruise industry would take this action at a time when airlines are assaulting the travel agency distribution system with below-cost compensation and cruise lines stand to be the beneficiaries of massive shifts of business effort in their direction.

Certainly Katrina eliminated boating activities in that part of the Gulf Coast, but for West Marine, 15 stores were directly affected by the hurricane. Last year, they had 60 stores in the path of major hurricanes, and it affected earnings by about a penny. At least with respect to the hurricanes, it should be less (of an impact) than what happened last year.

The hurricanes naturally tend to move from east to west because of the rotation of the Earth. The northern part of the hurricane moves faster than the southern part of the hurricane, so they tend to move across the Atlantic toward the Caribbean and the United States.

We're not just competing with other cruise lines, we're competing with other resorts. It's important that we keep up to date with what they're doing.

Cruise ships provided over two million meals, plus housing for over 8,000 hurricane victims, first responders, and representatives from eighteen federal and state agencies. Carnival Cruise Lines, Captain Angelo Los, and the staff of both the Ecstasy and the Sensation have been tremendous partners with FEMA throughout this recovery process.

Like any business, size is important when dealing with vendors. It gives us more muscle with airlines and tour and cruise lines.

When we have a hurricane, we don't cancel the Air Force, we don't cancel the Navy and we are not going to cancel NASA.

This is great news that more people are coming via the airlines. They traditionally tend to be the destination visitors who sometimes stay longer and spend more money, so that's a positive trend.

but don't blame Carnival Cruise Lines for canceling cruise ships with 100,000 customers. That's their business.

There's no reason that the cruise stuff can't get back up and running, ... demand (from cruise lines) could change with the fact that the city can't accommodate tourists.
