Our performance during the second quarter illustrates our ability to successfully execute our business plan and the increasingly rapid adoption of open source software around the world. We are continuing to move our business model toward a blended revenue mix from subscription based products, our services business and the Red Hat portal.

Nokia's membership in Eclipse reinforces our commitment to open source initiatives. This important step enables us to simplify our creation of tools and further harmonize our development tools offering across all Nokia software platforms. The key question for open source is, Which open source technologies are mature enough to survive the consolidation that's coming? Linux? Definitely. Eclipse? Definitely. Mozilla? Most likely.

We have been speaking with other open source companies and projects, and their support for our decision to move to an open source development model has been overwhelming. It was a challenging quarter for Micron Electronics. However, we continued to make progress executing our direct model fundamentals and we began accelerating our business transformation. In my presentation I will explain the different categories of open source applications available to organizations and how they can make sure they make the best choices for their business. Red Hat is the grandfather... and all the rest of the open source companies are emulating their business model. It's important for people behind to see that there's a healthy business ahead.

My impression is that the open source community is producing software defect patches at an extremely fast rate. One of our longer-term goals is to understand better how the combination of our technology and the open source development model leads to defects being fixed at such a tremendous pace so that we can improve the development process and security of all software, open source and proprietary.

We felt we could still be true to the open-source roots and at the same time go to a business model that was proven.

Look at commercial open source companies. How different is Red Hat's business model from Microsoft's? I'd say it's pretty marginal.

The suggestion is that open source would be a good thing for Solaris. However, there are trade-offs to the open-source model in terms of intellectual property ... and the stability, predictability, and support needed in a production environment.
