Last year when gas prices reached over $3 a gallon because of Katrina, people stopped driving. It could happen again if prices keep going up. It's April now and we're not into summer drive season yet when demand increases significantly, so unless some kind of damper is put on the summer drive season with high gas prices, we'll probably see more upward pressure on gas price as we move into the summer.

Canada was quite kind to the environment last year, with the fastest-growing segments entry-level products. High gas prices took a while, but they eventually resulted in a decided shift to smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles.

The federal government has to factor in these new fuel prices. That 50 cents a gallon suggests consumers will be much more willing to pay for high fuel-efficiency vehicles.

He came over after World War II. He was in Germany learning from engineers when he was 16 years old. They taught him the method, and he did it for a while during the 1970s oil crisis. About a year and a half ago we were talking about the high prices and he said he might have to make his own fuel. I asked him what he was talking about, and he showed me how to do it. I did it for my family vehicles, and for friends, and it worked great. I thought I can actually teach people how to do this.

The correlation between high oil prices and stocks has not been day-to-day. Sometimes the stock markets can ignore high prices, and the big debate is when will the prices get so high that they hurt the economy.

Even though the surge in inflation was one-off, it was pretty shocking and the jump in fuel prices is likely to have some knock-on effects. It's better to move now than to be forced to move more later.

Some of the capacity will go away if fuel prices stay this high. It (oil prices near $50 a barrel) could hasten US Airways' demise.

We're seeing evidence of Utah households responding to higher fuel costs by driving less, heating less, and being more efficient. And if oil prices stay high, we should also see more enduring efforts to explore alternatives, like tar sands and oil shale.

It will be more of a political move on the part of OPEC to calm high oil prices.
