Many of the folks here are active genealogy and family history buffs, and it's fun for us.

I've worked with the genealogy library since it began. Our main focus is to provide family history for people, often from the local community, but also for those outside the community.

We're really a group of history buffs interested in Civil War history, ... Wherever we find a grave that hasn't been marked, we get a federal marker for it.

We have video from several people within the community that are history buffs. We had one person who submitted something on the history of the capitol building. There's no limit. We invite individuals, groups businesses, corporations.

If you're successful doing genealogy, there's a necessity to be organized. I also love working jigsaw puzzles — and our genealogy is a great big jigsaw puzzle. And buy a computer with lots of memory.

Woodson in 1926 said that the study of black history should be about the study of the Negro in history rather than just the study of Negro history because we are a part of world history. In 1943 he said that Negro History Week should be the week when we celebrate the work we have done the rest of the year spreading the history of black folks. Now today it is almost the exact opposite.

What we try to do is keep our happy history stuff separate from our regular business. People who are doing genealogy are all excited about researching Miles Davis; you don't want them to be in a situation where they're working next to someone burying a loved one.

It's similar to having a family history for a disease. You can't alter your family history or your baldness, but there are many ways to modify your risk factors,
