About 100 firefighters every year die in the line of duty and another 100,000 suffer lost-time injuries. Despite better equipment and training, that overall rate doesn't seem to drop.

I know that a lot of the fire stations down there have been destroyed, fire equipment has been lost or destroyed, firefighters don't have any way to communicate. So are these firefighters alive? Missing?

Part of the fire grants designated by Congress is set aside for health and safety for firefighters. We lose, over 50 percent of our firefighters' fatalities are heart attacks and strokes.

The type of thing that can be handled by a two-man team with a small fire extinguisher. We're not firefighters of first responders, but we're trained to know what we can handle as well as what we can't handle.

We had the main fire under control within 45 minutes. The firefighters began separating and spreading some of the debris on the ground looking for hot spots, and continued to put out burning embers. There were over 40 firefighters working on this fire.

[The New Orleans fire chief requested 300 firefighters in a state by state request on Saturday to allow New Orleans firefighters to take leave so they can assess their personal damages from the hurricane.] They have been on duty since last Sunday and to this moment they have not been relieved. They have not been able to go see what their personal condition is, that of their community, their neighbors or had any personal opportunity to reflect upon what the situation is, ... they are devastated.

Obviously, we are very pleased. When the governor signs it, we hope to be done. This is a huge step for the memorial and for the firefighters, especially those who died in the line of duty.

Firefighters don't like the term 'culture change.' They think it's an assault on tradition. But look at the facts. Half of the firefighter deaths each year are due to heart attack, and another 25 percent are guys who die in car accidents on the way to the fire. Firefighters are indeed heroes, but these are not hero deaths.

(We will provide) technical rescue for the fire service, safety officers for the responders themselves (and) flammable liquid specialists. We're transporting our own fuel.

On Father's Day 2001, the mayor and I attended the funerals of three brave fire-fighters lost in the line of duty. I couldn't help thinking, as we were winding down our terms of office, that it was one of the saddest days I could remember, not knowing my life and the lives of those around me would change forever very soon.

We've positioned our first responders to be sent to the disaster zone to do rescues or recoveries after the storm, if asked. We're trying to have them geared up and ready to go whether it's swift water rescue, firefighters or electrical people trying to restore power. There's a potential for people with all sorts of different skills to be needed.
